Homemade Walnut Nutella

 

Walnuts are a plant-based source of Omega 3's, the good-for-you, heart healthy fats that we all need more of in our diet. Walnuts can be especially important to include in your diet if you don't eat fatty fish like salmon or tuna, other great animal-based sources of Omega 3 fats. 

To help you amp up your intake, let's start with this SUPER SIMPLE recipe that tastes like heaven and can be spread on fruit, rice cakes, toast or, let's face it, just eaten straight with a spoon :) 

Remember: Walnuts only contain the plant-based form of Omega 3s - ALA. You will still need adequate amounts of DHA, particularly in your third trimester.

Homemade Walnut Nutella

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups walnuts
  • 1 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

To Prepare:

  1. Toast walnuts on baking sheet in oven for ~10 min at 350F.
  2. While walnuts are roasting, place chocolate chips in microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for 2 minutes.
  3. Scrape melted chocolate into food processor with toasted walnuts, vanilla extract, almond extract and sea salt.
  4. Blend until smooth.
